The BEST First Day Ever!

I think that I had the best first day ever in all of my MANY years of teaching!
I just love my class!
We did lots of team building and getting to know you activities today and not much meat.
I learned a LOT about some of my kiddos!
One of them is even PERFECT (just ask him!)
One of the things we did today was the sticky note posters - you know which ones.
They are all over Pinterest.
Here are ours...
No surprises on this one.
We learn new stuff every day.
We learn new things.
To get ready for college.

Survey says...
Clean, Quiet, Fun!

OKAY, a few surprises here...
To fly around the world. (?)
Being good.
Getting good grades/Honor Roll
Getting organized

They nailed this one!
Work hard.
Pay attention!
No talking, playing and doing silly stuff.
Here are some of their responses...

My third grade pals trained them well!

Here's where it got interesting.
One of my boys came up and said there really wasn't anything I could do.
I said, "Really? You are already perfect?  I mean, I already know that you are AMAZING, but try to think of something I can do to help you be successful."
After a few minutes he's back with his answer, "I got nothing.  I'm just perfect."
...and he is, and I love him already!
Here is what he put on the chart
Oh, and they want HOMEWORK!

Here's what they want from each other...

Later on we did the Saving Fred activity that I found at Lorraine's Fabulous 4th Grade Froggies.
AFTER I planned it, I found out that they did it last year!  Oh well, they had fun anyway.

It was a great day, and I can't wait to get back to these kiddos tomorrow!

I hope all of you have fabulous first days too!

Did you write your questions up ahead of time? Or, did you write them up as you thought of them with the students? Love them!

    Thanks for sharing! Debra

  23. I did this is September with my class too! It was great! I didn't think of doing this as a new year activity but it would be awesome! I am holding a New Year Linky Party and would love it if you would link up. Please hop over to and join the party!

  25. Wow! This looks great! I think I will try it this year!

  26. I love this idea for my middle schoolers, but am going to use it as my second day this coming year. I teach Spanish and I always let my students pick their Spanish nickname, nick-action, and nick-noise the first day (I have a list of crazy names like Oso (bear) or Pestoso (Stinky) and the kids choose one and the class helps them come up with an action and a sound to go with their new nickname. We make a game out of it - I call out a nickname and that person stands up and does their nick-action and nick-noise. I usually have all their nicknames down by the end of the first day!)

  27. I love this! I will probably use it on my second day however as my students get to pick their Spanish nicknames on day 1.

  28. I can't wait to try this post-it idea. The first day of school is a real challenge for me! Thanks for sharing.

  29. I have a question about how you did this activity.
I absolutely love it and would like to use it for my internship coming up!!

Did you have the posters posted around the room and the students traveled to each one to post their answer or did you answer each poster together as a class one by one? How exactly did you have this activity organized in your classroom? I love that you were having them think about what they wanted from their learning environment and what they (and you as their teacher) needed to do to accomplish this :)

    1. We did the posters one at a time. I posed the question to the kids and had them respond on post-it notes and stick to the poster. Then we moved on to the next question.

    2. Okay, thank you so much!!

    3. Okay, thanks so much!!

  30. I love your ideas! About how long did the saving Fred Activity last?

  31. I like your idea. It's so cool ! I think I'm going to try it with my pupils and I hope it'll work . Thanks for sharing.
