Our Latest Book

Our first "published" class book was such a hit (you can read about it here,)
that I decided to make another one!
As a culmination of our MLK study we brainstormed ideas for dreams
we had for our school, community, and the world.

The kids chose a dream and wrote about it and what they could do personally to affect the change.
In the tech lab, they created and formatted their thought bubbles.
Then they drew self-portraits.
I uploaded their portraits and dreams into Snapfish (where I had a buy one, get two free coupon) and made them into this book.
I also created one at
Studentreasures Book Publishing
that the parents could pre-order, but those have not yet arrived.
I'll post pictures of those when I get them.

I just ♥ the way these "published" books look!
Our librarian even wants copies to put in the school library!

Math Foldables

In math we are working on geometry.
We started out by making this 2-dimensional shapes foldable.

To get the shapes I used, click on the image below.

We also made this one for lines.

For the images I used, click the picture below.
I have more things to share, but it is time to head to bed.
So until next time...

What have YOU been up to?

First up...

Olive Garden’s Pasta E Fagioli Soup

Oh my, it was easy and tastes delicious!

This is THE BEST crockpot meal I've ever made. Sooooo easy too. Cheese Tortellini, with sausage, spinach, tomatoes and a cream sauce. MMMMmmmmm...Blog has more specific instructions.

Can't wait for this to be done!  Hope it is as creamy delish as it looks!

And finally...

Creamy Slow Cooker Tortellini Soup

Five For Friday (on Saturday)

I did not have a chance yesterday to post,
so I am linking up a day late with Kacey over at Doodle Bugs
for the...
fiveforfriday

So here goes, 5 random things about my week.

1.  I "lost" some kiddos over the break.  One of them moved into another class, one that I knew about moved during the break, and one that I did not know about left.  Their absences have really changed the dynamics of the class.  Maybe it is because of them and maybe it is just the calm after the holiday frenzy, but they seem much calmer since we came back.

2.  I have a new student teacher that started this week and she is FABULOUS!  After just a couple of days, she is already taking over some of the lessons and doing a great job.
I purchased this adorable student teacher binder file from Rachelle Smith from What the Teacher Wants and made a binder for her.
She loved it!

3.  In our Reading Workshop we are working on making connections and listening to our inner voice.  On Monday I used this great resource from my pal Farley over at Oh' Boy Fourth Grade.

4. In writing we are practicing for the upcoming district writing assessment.  It is a totally new format for the kiddos, writing a response about what they have read, versus just writing to a given prompt. The new prompt is based of the format of the new PARCC tests that we will soon be using.  It was a challenge for them, but we will continue practicing next week.  I hope to have them ready for the assessment.

5.  In math we have been working on interpreting remainders.  This too has been a challenge for them.  One of the things we did was to use this fun task card set from Rachel Lynette.
We played "Scoot" and the kids had fun with it even though they are still having a hard time with it.  I would love to hear your ideas for teaching this, especially if you have had great success with it.

Hop on over to Doodle Bugs and see what everyone has been up to.

I am also linking up with my buddy Michelle, the 3 AM Teacher for her Friday Five.

First up the FREEBIE...
Not mine but since many of us will be focusing on Black History Month next month, this is timely.

Next the FIND...
I absolutely ♥ Jen Bengel's reading units!  I am so glad I discovered them!  She has them for several grade levels and they will save you a ton of planning time!
Check them out here.
Here are some of them...

I have purchased ALL of them!

...and the FUNNY
♥ this pic that my friend Deb Fransen posted on her FB page.

FRAZZLE?
When we went over interpreting remainders in math and the kids all seemed to "get it," but when we played the scoot game they bombed because they did not actually READ the questions!

Finally the FEATURE.
This is one of my all time favorite books.  As a child I read every one I could get my hands on.
Many of my students love them as much as I do.
The literature study that I made to go with this book is my best seller, and a bargain at just $5.
Check it out here.
Do your kiddos like these books as much as mine do?

So what were you up to this week?

Writing Resoulutions and What's Ahead in 2013?

I am so sad that my break is just about over!
I sure will miss having the time to blog stalk and browse Pinterest.
This morning I got this great idea from Joann over at Fifth is Fabulous!
If you haven't been there yet, go check it out.
She has some awesome ideas!

Anyhoo...
She had her kiddos think about their writing and write some goals for improvement.
♥♥♥LOVED!♥♥♥ the idea.
What a great way to get back into the swing of things tomorrow.
So I created this little freebie to share.
Click on the image to download your copy.

Off to finish putting away the last of the holiday stuff and finish planning for next week.
What great ideas do you have to start of the new year?
I would LOVE to hear about them!

I am also linking up with Michelle over at Making It As A Middle School Teacher for her
What's Ahead In 2013 Linky.

So, What is in store for YOU in 2013?
C'mon over and link up here.

Five For Friday and a Teachers Notebook Sweepstakes!

This is my first Five for Friday link up
fiveforfriday
5 random things about my day ...

1.  I started off my day by meeting up with some teaching buddies that I used to work with.
At one time we all worked together, but we have gone in different directions.
Some of us The lucky ones have retired.
Others have changed schools.
Some of us have moved on to different districts.
Some have left teaching for a bit and have made their way back.
No matter how long between visits, we always seem to just pick up where we left off.
It was a great way to finish up my winter break!

2.  I am getting a student teacher starting on Monday,
so I have been working hard to get things organized and ready for her to jump right in.

3.  I gave up on the tables in my classroom and have switched back to the dreaded desks.
I did not like not being able to move things around for various projects and activities.
I also had a few blind spots due to the bookcases at the end of each table.
This meant that I had to empty the bookcases and reload the desks,
new arrangement, new procedures.
You get the picture.
I'll post pics of the new setup later this weekend.

4.  I have been working on putting together my MLK unit,
looking at everything I have, and picking up some new stuff from TPT.
Here are a couple of the ones I bought today...

MLK and Civil Rights
and
Poetry Possibilities -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
I'd love to hear what great ideas you have for teaching about MLK.

5.  I am also gathering ideas for an Inventors and Inventions
unit that I am working on with my art teacher friend, Melissa.
We are focusing on DaVinci, but I plan to include others as well.
Please point me in the direction of any ideas that you may have!

If you want to join in on the fun.. hop on over to Doodle Bugs and see what everyone else is up to!

Currently and a Shout Out Linky!

First off, I am hooking up with Farley over at Oh Boy! 4th Grade

for this month's Currently.

My daughter has been such a help this holiday season!
She did most of the decorating herself, and has now taken most of it down
and packed it away herself.  I appreciate her SOOOOO much!

I am loving this time after Christmas and New Year's
to get some things done I wanted to do,
catch up with friends, watch movies, sleep in,
and in general, decompress from the busy-ness of all things school related.

The table thing just wasn't working for me in my classroom,
so I have had them replace with the old desks that I hate too,
but they are more convenient because I can move things around more easily
and no longer have any "blind spots."
So now I just have to get things re-organized before next Monday.

I have a student teacher starting on Monday and have to get things ready for her to jump right in.
Need to find my mojo so I can get things done!

I am also linking up with Lisa at Growing Firsties for her Shout Out Linky.

One of my new favorite blogs is The Peanut Gallery
I have gotten some great ideas from her site.
My favorite was her

My kiddos did a great job on these!  You can check out my post about them here.

My other favorite blog is Lorraine's Fabulous 4th Grade Froggies.
Fabulous 4th Grade Froggies
We have been online buddies for a LOOOONG time,
and she was my inspiration to get into blogging.
Her support and encouragement mean a LOT to me!
I ♥ that lady!

Blogging has made a big difference for me.
I LOVE all of your blogs and stalk them often for ideas and inspiration.

Can't wait to see who your favorites are.
