Word Play With William Steig

Happy Friday!

Do you like playing with words?
Word puzzles?
Brain teasers?

I love them, so I thought I would share with you a couple of fun books I discovered a few years ago.

Can you figure this out?

(HINT:  It's how I feel on Friday afternoon.)

It's from this book by William Steig

To figure out his word puzzles, all you have to do is read the letters, numbers, and symbols aloud.
If at first you cannot figure it out, look at the clever illustrations for clues.
Some are easy.
Some are hard.
But it is fun to try to decode these word puzzles.

Kids will have a great time trying to figure them out too!
My class loved them!

Did you figure out the one above?

I haven't any energy.

Here's another one...

Not too bad, huh?

the ones from the first book, C D B! are easier for younger students.

This book,

has ones that are a little trickier.

Both books include an answer key at the end of the book.
I will reluctantly admit that a couple of them even stumped me.

I think this would be a fun writing activity to do with the older kiddos, or maybe as a challenge for your higher students.  Have them create their own.

Maybe I'll try this the next time I substitute...

I love William Steig and have used many of his books over the years.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Here's a little goody I made for this favorite of mine earlier this year.

If you use C D B! or C D C? with you kiddos,
I would love to see what they come up with.

Have fun!

  1. Thank you for this awesome recommendation! I am planning to use those two books with my "high" group of kids during our intervention time. Also, I LOVE the Amos & Boris freebie--we just wrapped up character traits and character change over time, and we can use it to launch compare/contrast and review at the same time! Thank you so much!
