Thematic Thursday - Overcoming Obstacles

We all face challenges and obstacles in our lives.
We all deal with those challenges and obstacles differently.

Kids in foster care face a special kind of obstacle,
uncertainty.

Here in Arizona, we have over 16,000 kids in foster care.
The system is overloaded and sometimes they fall through the cracks.

I could help.
I could make a difference in the lives of some of these children.

So I became a CASA.
I DO make a difference in the lives of these children.
I matter.
THEY Matter!

For this week's Thematic Thursday
I am sharing some resources for helping kids in foster care
overcome some of their obstacles.

Here are some great picture books.

And for the older kids, here are some great chapter books.
This one has been a favorite of mine for MANY years and is a favorite read aloud for my students.

And for adults...

has some great activities for middle school and high school students.

Blowin’ in the Wind! gives students the opportunity to encourage their peers in a team setting, where strong communication skills and the ability to mainstream positive attitude in a challenging situation are key elements for success.  This 15-minute lesson/activity is easy to do with things you probably already have in your classroom.  It is a great springboard for discussion about trying and confidence building.

Pass it On requires 2 pennies and 30 minutes.  Pass it On! is an engaging and effective activity that helps students understand the importance of patience and communication when working as part of a team.

This free activity from Hannah Burns is a great way to spark discussions on disabilities, overcoming obstacles, and perseverance with your students.

Think about what you can do to help foster kids overcome their challenges, be it in your classroom, donating your time or money, supporting foster care agencies in your area, or better yet,
become a CASA!
