Saturday Snapshots - A Day in the Desert

Yesterday I had an awesome day
with my buddy Michelle from The 3AM Teacher.

We took a trip out to the
Desert Botanical Gardens.

Here are some of my favorite pics from our day in the desert.

Book Talk Thursday

Today I'm going to share what I have been reading lately.

Yesterday I mentioned this one in my Historical Fiction post.
I just loved it!

Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t.

Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With the integrity of the closest friend she’s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she’s made about her life and her family. In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths to which we will go in order to keep the past from dictating the future.

This one, I didn't want to put down.

Grenadine Scotch Wild has only vague memories of the parents she last saw when she was six years old. But she's never forgotten their final, panicked words to her, urging Grenadine to run. The mystery of their disappearance is just one more frayed strand in a life that has lately begun to unravel completely. One year into her rocky marriage to Covey, a well-known investor, he is arrested for fraud and embezzlement. And Grenadine, now a successful collage artist and painter, is facing jail time despite her innocence.

With Covey refusing to exonerate her unless she comes back to him, Grenadine once again takes the advice given to her so long ago: she runs. Hiding out in a mountain town in central Oregon until the trial, she finds work as a bartender and as assistant to a furniture maker who is busy rebuilding his own life. But even far from everything she knew, Grenadine is granted a rare chance, as potentially liberating as it is terrifying—to face down her past, her fears, and live a life as beautiful and colorful as one of her paintings.

This one is older, but still a good read!

Every fire begins with a little heat–and in Slow Burn, bestselling author Julie Garwood provides the spark, skillfully blending pulse-pounding action, intense emotion, and characters with grit and heart. The result is an electrifying novel of romantic suspense that will have readers burning through the pages.

An unpretentious beauty who radiates kindness, Kate MacKenna doesn’t have a bad bone in her body–or an enemy in the world. So why are bombs igniting everywhere she goes? The first explosion brings her face-to-face with a handsome Charleston police detective. The second sends her into the arms of her best friend’s brother–a Boston cop who’s a little too reckless and way too charming for comfort. But Dylan Buchanan won’t let emotion prevent him from doing his job: Someone is trying to kill Kate, and Dylan is the only one standing between her and the monster who wants her dead.

I would love to hear about what you are reading too!

Hooray for Historical Fiction!

I absolutely
L.O.V.E.
Historical Fiction!

LOTS of Historical Fiction teaching resources! Book Lists, Anchor Charts, Teaching Ideas, and MORE! Resources cover The Civil War, Immigration to the US, World War II – the 1940’s, the 1960’s – Civil Rights. Everything you need to get started with Historical Fiction in the elementary classroom.

As I was getting my unit ready, I asked some friends what resources for Historical Fiction they would like to see and the results were:
The Civil War
Immigration to the US
World War II
and the 1960's

What luck!
Those are my favorite time periods to teach about!

So I will break down my resources today by time period.

I start out (obviously) by talking about what historical fiction is and how we will be talking about it.

Then I begin with a read aloud mentor text.
There are so many to choose from!
Choose one that aligns with the time period you study or just one that you and your kiddos will enjoy.
Here's a link I found on Pinterest with some examples.

As you read, have the kids jot down on sticky notes or in their reading journals what they notice while you are reading.  With younger students, you can do this together after you read the book.

Then use their ideas and sort them into things that are real facts about the historical period and which are fictional details the author added to make the story interesting.
You can also create a timeline of events from the story.

Once student are familiar with these strategies, they can move on to work in book clubs or independently.

Here are some other ideas to use with your students.

I've been thinking all week about what I wanted to do with some of the photos and how I want to display them.  This morning I started fiddling around on PIC Monkey and came up with these.  I love how they turned out and my 19-year-old son was very impressed!

This one is my favorite!
